TheSystem

A desktop companion to your mobile phone. (WIP)

A private, intuitive Operating System

TheSystem aims to prop up a bridge between the current FOSS mobile distros on the one hand, and the PC on the other hand.

TheSystem is:

  • A privacy-friendly operating system with unparalleled levels of integration with your mobile phone, including native support for Android apps.
  • Incredibly customizable as it is fully declarative and supports using any Linux distro (within containers).

This is perfect for mobile OS makers, who can use it as a basis for making a customized PC OS to accompany their mobile OS, so that they can offer their users Apple-like continuum of operating system, from mobile to tablet to PC.

TheSystem shall, thus, unite mobile operating systems with Linux, as users (from consumers to big organizations) increasingly appreciate having ONE integrated experience from mobile to PC. This would also, in a way, help Europe break free from the clutches of American and Asian tech, and move on the path of digital sovereignty.

Included in TheSystem is native support for Android apps (through WayDroid, MicroG and F-Droid), the Murena (/e/) cloud services, apps/packages from several Linux distributions (including Ubuntu, Fedora and Arch Linux) & web app support from the /e/ store.

TheSystem is declarative. The state of your system can be defined through a single, simple configuration file. This also allows for incredibly easy vendor customization, and helps with deploying multiple computer with the same configuration.

Immutable.
Atomic.
Declarative.

An immutable system is one where system files cannot be modified. Atomic (transactional) updates prevent your system from ever breaking, as system updates are only applied if they are successful.

Moreover, atomic updates do not require any user intervention, and updates are automatically downloaded in the background and applied on the next boot (without wasting any of your time).
